How Will You Relax Today???
I grew up in a small town in MN that was predominantly of Mennonite faith. On Sundays, everything in town was closed, because Sunday was to be "the day of rest". I hated it because the town was boring to begin with and this made it even worse.
After getting married, my husband Rick and I moved to St. Louis Park. I loved the fast pace, excitement, and something always going on, regardless of the hour or day of week. Soon, Sunday became the day to catch up on office or housework, taking the kids to multiple soccer events, or doing yard work. Oftentimes, I looked forward to Monday, so the pace would be back to a gentler routine.
We try to cram so much more into already busy lives, but the reality of not relaxing on a regular basis is affecting our health. Lack of mental or physical rest can cause frequent headaches, aches, and pains, sleeping problems, forgetfulness (this is what happens to me) and even heart issues. So, if you aren't getting in some regular downtown, I highly encourage you to do so and here are some ideas to get you started:
- Take a nap (one of my absolute favorites!)
- Curl up in a comfy chair with a hot beverage and read a chapter in a book or thumb through a magazine
- Do a crossword puzzle, play solitaire on your phone, doodle, color or scrapbook
- Sit outside in nature and take in the sights, sounds and smells around you
- Schedule some fun and something that makes you laugh
- Take a hot bath with Epsom salts in the tub, candles, and nature sounds playing in the background (I listen to the ocean)
- Get a massage, manicure or pedicure
I'm not saying Sunday has to be your day of rest, but just think how much better off you and your health would be if you regularly let your mind and body rest. Schedule in some time of rest TODAY.
